John Perez (D-L.A.) was unanimously elected Speaker of the California State Assembly by the Democratic Caucus. John's candidacy was actively supported by the Stonewall Democrats statewide through the Democratic Party's LGBT Caucus as well as Equality California and other progressive organizations.
John becomes the first openly gay Speaker of the California Assembly. His election will be formalized at a future session of the Assembly.
Pedro Nava, 35th Assembly District representative and candidate for Attorney General, said "California got it right today. This is great news. John's going to be a wonderful speaker and a great ambassador for all the people.".
